It's almost like we're on a schedule or something. From about mid October through December, even into January and February sometimes, we start getting colds, flu, or having other health problems flare up. And we can't seem to put our finger on the reason why, so it just continues to happen year after year. What is going on?
Well, lets think about a couple of things: when it gets cold and damp outside, we tend to spend more time inside, right? Some people even work more to make extra money, so they're inside at the office more. And, when holidays do come around, some of us are off and spend more time inside our homes with our families, etc. Hmmm... There does seem to be a pattern there. In general, most of us are spending more time indoors than usual during the last quarter of the year and into the first quarter, because of weather, work, or holidays. Could there be a correlation between us getting sick more often because we're indoors, too?
Well, there is a correlation between being indoors more and getting sick more often. There are numerous studies that have been done that prove conclusively that most of our homes do have indoor air that is loaded with the types of bacteria, mold spores and viruses that cause allergies, asthma, colds, flu and even major illnesses. So it makes sense that staying indoors more during the holidays would expose you to more of the pollutants in your home than normal, and cause you to become ill more often. The good news is that it has been discovered where most of the germs and pollutants are coming from and because of that, there's a way to prevent a lot of it and it's working well for many people already. It's called air conditioner UV light air purification.
Now, it is true that a lot cold and flu viruses are transmitted between people, however, a large good percentage of the problem-causing bacteria, mold spores and viruses, unfortunately, come directly from our air conditioner ducts. The air conditioner ducts? Yes, and here's how that happens: we track in all sorts of dust every day we walk into our homes, after coming into contact with lots of people and things, which adds to the bacteria & virus-laden dust and particles already there.
This 'dust' is then circulated through the HVAC system where a lot of it is stopped by the air conditioner filters. However, many of the smaller, more dangerous dust particles that are about 2.5 microns and smaller pass right through the filter (the pores in the filter are not small enough to capture them) and out into the duct work. As the air blows through the duct work, some of that bacteria & virus-loaded dust is released into the air and blows right out into our rooms, spreading live cold and flu causing bacteria and viruses to every part of our home. For those that have UV light air cleaner systems mounted in their air conditioners, however, they tend to not be infected because the UV light sterilizes the air before it blows out of the ducts. Pretty smart.
In fact, ultraviolet light air purifiers with true laboratory grade 36 watt bulbs are strong enough kill 95-99% of bacteria and viruses the first time the air passes by the lights. UV light not only destroys bacterial and viral cell structure, but it destroys their DNA, preventing them from reproducing. UV light air cleaners with UV-C light also produce healthy negative ions (OH-, not ozone), which also destroy bacteria and viruses, and do a good job of eliminating various odors in the home. All of that air cleaning power for about as much as the energy it takes to run a normal light bulb. You do want to make sure that whatever air conditioner UV light air purifier you buy has those lab-grade 36 watt bulbs, not the lower wattage bulbs that don't work as well.
Also make sure that you get at least two bulbs and place them 30 inches apart on the output side of the air conditioner, in the first few feet of the duct attached to the air conditioner output. Using two 36 watt bulbs isn't mandatory, but it does give you that 99% kill rate the first time the air passes by the UV bulbs. One bulb will give you about a 70% kill on the first pass, and will kill about 85% of the organisms. To kill 99% or more of all the germs, you really need the two bulb system with double the light rays as some organisms require that full 44,000 light units to kill them.
Most people that install these UV air cleaner systems notice a big difference in about 24-48 hours--a big difference air quality, better sleep, less respiratory symptoms, and more. And, they notice that they don't get sick as often or the illnesses don't last nearly as long, and the only thing that's different is that they now have UV lights killing over 99% of any airborne bacteria, cold & flu viruses on a daily basis. So instead of suffering so much this holiday season, consider a UV light air cleaner system--this may not only help you and your family stay well and enjoy the holidays, but might save you a lot on medications and trips to the doctor, as well.

To your health--and Happy Holidays!
Hi, I'm Rex Murphy and I wrote this article hopefully help those that tend to get sick during the holidays and really need relief. We have found in research and heard from many customers that UV lights really do help keep their homes and offices germ free, which helps them enjoy time with family and other activities more.
